Carissa varieties 'Natal Plum', grow slowly, can be kept small, and have some of the most exquisitely beautiful deep green foliage shrubs. Its low spreading habit makes it an ideal ground cover shrub. It may bloom anytime of the year. The charm of the Natal plum lies in rich green, closely set 1-inch-long oval leaves and fragrant flowers, 2 inches across, followed by 2-inch scarlet fruits that look like plums.
The plant is tough, can tolerate unfavorable conditions. The glossy, dark green foliage and beautiful white flowers provide visual appeal. The crimson fruit, which can be of very good quality, should not be permitted to go to waste. The carissa deserves recognition as an outstanding dual-purpose plant.
- Carissa grandiflora does best in at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day.Water regularly but allow time for these shrubs to dry out a bit between watering.The soil should be well drained and fertile, rich in organic content for growing plant.15 – 25 °CDuring the main growing season feed the plant with organic fertilizer.
