Schlumbergera, commonly known as Thanksgiving Cactus. Holiday cacti bloom around the season for which they are named. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the Thanksgiving cactus blooms around November. The Thanksgiving holiday cactus is an easy to grow interior plant. Both Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti are in the genus Schlumbergera and are native to the tropical forests of Brazil.
Thanksgiving Cactus can be long-lived and are even sometimes passed down as family heirlooms. Though it thrives on kind neglect and blooms best when pot-bound, you should repot your Thanksgiving Cactus roughly every three years to prevent soil compaction or any time that roots of the plant protrude from the bottom of the pot.
- Thanksgiving cactus grows best in light shade during the summer months.Don’t let these tropical plants dry out, but be sure that they don’t collect excess water in the root area, either.It is best to use cactus and succulent soil as it is a good fast-draining medium that works great for these plants.15 - 23°CDuring the spring, fertilize the plant once a month.
